Long Ridge Library Internet Usage Policy
Approved: July 1, 2025
To comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and maintain eligibility for E-rate/USAC funding, Long Ridge Library adopts the following Internet Usage Policy.
1. Technology Protection Measures
All Internet-accessible computers and wireless networks provided by the Library will employ filtering software (technology
protection measures) to block visual depictions that are:
• Obscene (per 18 U.S.C. § 1460),
• Child pornography (per 18 U.S.C. § 2256), or
• Harmful to minors (as defined by CIPA).
These filters are applied to both adult and minor users and will be enforced on all devices utilizing the Library’s Internet service.
2. Access by Adults
Adults (18+) may request the disabling of filtering software for lawful research or other lawful purposes. Staff may also disable filters as necessary for their work duties.
3. Use by Minors
Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their child’s Internet use. The Library provides guidance on safe online
behavior and responsible use. Minors require parental approval for computer access, consistent with Library card policies.
4. Internet Safety and User Privacy
To promote safe Internet use:
• Users should avoid sharing personal information online.
• Library staff will provide educational materials on online safety.
• The Library is not liable for user-disclosed information or access to unsafe sites due to filter limitations.
5. Prohibited Conduct
The following are not permitted:
• Unauthorized access (e.g., hacking),
• Circumventing or altering security or filtering software,
• Damaging or altering Library computer systems,
• Violating copyright or software licenses.
Violations may result in suspension of access privileges.
6. Federal Depository Access
As required by law, the Library will provide unfiltered access to U.S. Government publications, regardless of user age.
